I’ve been wanting to read a good story about witches that was not a comedy nor modern for a long time.
When after a serious search I could not find one, I decided to write my own. I wrote a few short stories—never published—just to play with certain ideas. When I felt that I had a pretty good handle on what story I wanted to tell—and in which world I wanted it to take place—I wrote my first novel, Witch of the Defiled. This story, though set in a fictional medieval world, is strongly influenced by Mesopotamian myths. What I like about these myths is that the witch is not so much a practitioner of magic as a magical being. I tried to incorporate this element into my story. The moral of this, at least for writers, is that if there is a story that you want to read and it is not available, write it yourself.
